Back to Lace in Italy

Maria Bissacco Cociani
Trieste (TS)
e-mai: liviots37@libero.it

Maria, already a qualified dressmaker, started bobbin lacing in 1994. She got a diplome in Lace teaching from the Bobbin Lace School of Gorizia in 2000/2001. Then she attended many specialization courses, the most significant of which are probably a Colour Code course for lace patterns
by Marianne Stang in 1999 and a recent course about history and technique of Bohemian lace run by famous teachers from the Czech Republic.

In addition, she followed some courses on the technique of processing the felt at the Textile  Crafts Association in 2003 and 2004.

Maria follows a deep inward research when she designs and executes her lace pattern, with a view to turn it into an art work and at  the same time without misrepresenting the traditional lace, a sample of which is always present in her works.

She took part in a number of exhibitions and entred various competitions in Italy and abroad (Hungary, Slovene, Czech Republic and Japan) where she has always had the chance to give expression to her considerable creativity and artistry.

In July 2004 she came second in the competition of OIDFA World Convention (the international organization of lace makers) and she ran a lace course for beginners in the town of Pinzolo.

In summer 2005 she took part, with her stand, at Valtopina Lace and Embroidery Fair. She took also part into Offida "Il Fusello d'Oro" Lace Competition and sent a cross to Cervaro lace exhibit "A Cross in the Benedictine Land".

A number of articles on her creations appeared both on specialised magazines (OIDFA Bulletin, Krajka) and on newpapers such as "Il Piccolo" and "Trieste Oggi".
