Lucia Costantini
Burano (VE)

Lucia Costantini was born in Burano and has made lace since she was a child, learning all the old secrets of needlelace from women in her family. In 1984 she obtained her diploma as lace maker from Burano lace school, specializing in the study of stiches and lace design.

Possessing great intelligence, sensitivity and artistic talent, Lucia is able to create her own designs and transform them into traditionally white as well as contemporary lace, with uncommon designs and materials.

Instead of repeating designs of the past, she prefers lace design of her land: Venice, the laguna, boats and fisching nets, gondolas, oar locks, roof tops, bell towers …

She also challenged herself to Conteporary Art pieces, inspired by cubism, abtract and surrealistic Art.

She took part in many group and one man exibits all over Italy, in Europe,Japan, Cina and U.S.A. She was the first italian lacemaker invited to partecipate in the prestigious International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Brussels (Belgium) and was chosen as one of the ten nominated to be personnaly honored by Queen Fabiola of Belgium.

In 1993 she was invited to the United States to give lacemaking lessons at some of  the most important Universities of California. She gave also lacemaking courses at Gorizia Lace School, at Sansepolcro International Lace Biennial (where she received both the gold and silver medal, that testify of the quality of her work), at Italia Invita Lace and Embroidery Forum.

Cited in Italian Treccani Encyclopedia, many of her works have been published in important catalogues, magazines, books, daily papers. She made also a video, demonstrating the different stiches of Burano lace, for Marcello Foundation.
